Josh Griffin interviews Mercy Me’s Bart Millard about his life story in the new movie, I Can Only Imagine, in theaters 3/16/18.

In high school, Millard wanted to become a football player, which ended when he injured his ankles at a high school football game. As a result, Millard took choir as an elective. Millard’s father died during his freshman year of college, and his youth pastor invited him to work with the church’s youth group worship band. Millard accepted and worked with the video and audio systems for the group. James (Jim) Bryson played piano for that band and later went on to play with Bart Millard and the worship band on a trip to Switzerland. This trip inspired Millard to pursue a full-time musical career. Millard and two of his friends moved to Oklahoma City, and formed MercyMe. Since then, the band has recorded six Independent, nine Studio, two Exclusive, two Christmas, and one Compilation album.

I haven’t seen the movie but I was the cook for the camp in Switzerland. The guys had a room next to mine and I heard all their raucous kidding about. I caught them eating leftovers one night after they sneaked in my kitchen. I then cooked for them personally. They sent for me one night during a performance which at that point, I hadn’t attended due to my being so busy. I cried like a baby when I heard the song” I can only imagine” and I deeply wondered why they weren’t ALREADY successful. They were AWESOME and provided a great WORSHIP EXPERIENCE. Anyway, they called me up on stage and honored all my efforts before the crowd. It showed humility. I LOVED these guys and I KNEW if anyone else of clout ever heard that song, they would go places… and, they did. I’m proud of them. How blessed!!!!!!!!!
